Over time and because of traits we inherit, the face develops lines in areas that can lead to misinterpretation of our mood, overestimation of our age, or sometimes leave us with a desire for a more refined look.

Among the most common examples of this are the lines that separate the upper lip from the cheek.  These are often called the naso-labial folds or the cheek-lip grooves, but are a stereotypical sign of aging - often prematurely!

Other trouble spots include lines extending down from the corners of the mouth, circles below the eyes, flattending of the cheeks or downturned corners of the mouth.  Of course, the lips also can thin with age and develop some vertical lines as well.

Over the past 20 years, many substances have been tried for injection augmentation in these areas.  While initially effective, many of these were either very short lived (only about 2 months) or led to serous long-term complications.  Fortunately, the injectable filler materials most often in use now (Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane) are extremely safe and offer longer (9-12 months) benefit. 

This class of injectable filler material, called Hyaluronic Acid Fillers (or HA's for short) are also reversible in the rare instance that a patient desires the material be removed.
